dc.description.abstract Two medicinal plants of Bangladesh, Tinospora crispa (L.) Hook.f. & Thoms (Family Menispermaceae) & Stephania japonica (Thunb.) Miers (Family: Menispermaceae) has been investigated for the isolation of natural products & evaluation of their pharmacological activities. The powdered stems of both plants were subjected to cold extraction with methanol at room temperature. The methanol extract of the Tinospora crispa stem was also subjected to fractionation by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) using various proportions of solvent systems with increasing polarity. The VLC column fraction 18-20 afforded a white crystal,T1. The NMR spectra of T1suggested that it was furanoid diterpene glucoside of clerodane series .The structure of the compound has been identified by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, ESIMS & 1H-1H COSY,HMBC,HSQC spectra. The isolated compound T1 was identified as a novel organic compound diterpene in nature having five stereo centre (structure shown below) and was named as Crispene E. The powdered stems of the plant Stephania japonica was partitioned with pet ether, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform & ethyl acetate by modified Kupchan partition method.Various fractions were termed as Ethyl acetate soluble fraction (EAJS), chloroform soluble fraction (CLJS), carbontetrachloride soluble fraction (CTJS) and petroliun ether soluble fraction (PEJS). en_US
