This study was conducted to identify the self-concept among adolescents who are receiving
psychiatric treatment. The self-concept, anxiety, depression, anger, and disruptive Behavior of
Beck Youth Inventory were administered to in a group of200 clinical adolescent's (98 male and
102 female) as a comparison 203 non-clinical adolescents (110 male and 93 Female ). Age
range was 10 to 17 years. Results indicated that self-concept is negatively correlated with,
anxiety, depression, anger, and disruptive behavior. Moreover anxiety was significantly
positively related with depression, anger and disruptive behavior. Difference between clinical
and non-clinical group were found in all areas, clinical adolescents showed less self-concept,
higher anxiety, more depression, anger and disruptive behavior compared to non-clinical
adolescents. Gender difference was observed where female participants scored higher in
depression then male. Age had an impact on psychological distress. Older adolescent showed
more depression and anger then younger adolescent. No significant difference was observed
between the effect of family type (nuclear and joint). Additionally birth order had significant
impact on self-concept anger and disruptive behavior. This study has given a clear picture of
self-concept of adolescents who are suffering from different mental disorder. Negative selfconcept
is related with anxiety, depression and other psychological distress. So, this finding will
help mental health professional to make an effective treatment plan. |
