Abstract:
The prime aim of this study is to assess Information Literacy (IL) Competencies and
proficiencies of the selected public university students of Bangladesh and to determine their
strengths and weaknesses. In general it was found that students had limited skills in the area
of the information literacy. The study exposed that, the information literacy competency of
the students is not in a good position.
Mixed methods of both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used, combining
questionnaire survey to examine public University students views and experiences with
information literacy; their opinions has been encapsulated and data findings that was
analyzed and presented in light of the responses of public university students of Bangladesh.
The findings of this study show the information literacy competency of the students is not in
a good position and information literacy and competency level is low. Most of the students
have not clear concept about information literacy and most of them vague concept.
Insufficient facilities and negligence of the department and university authority are the basic
problem to provide information literacy program. The study exposed that, students who
responded to the questionnaire, their information literacy is not so good. Students are
agreed to include IL program, IL education and training courses in their departments.
The study presents a viewpoint of the students of public University in information literacy
program and provides some insights into students’ knowledge about the concept of
information literacy and information literacy education. This study appeared that knowledge
needed for increasing information literacy capability such as how to access to information, when information is needed.
